Career Description

SUMMARY: This position is responsible for all packaging developmental activities in beef and pork business units and to be the support arm of Operations for packaging. The Packaging Specialist shall be responsible for evaluating and developing packaging systems including all primary and protective secondary packaging systems for beef and pork products. These evaluations and developments shall include product protection, package quality as defined by the market requirements,equipment efficiencies, and packaging cost optimization of current packaging systems as well as new packaging technologies. Collaborate with various internal groups including Sales and Marketing, Operations, Sourcing and packaging material/equipment suppliers to develop systems that deliver products that meet market requirements for the advancement of Tyson products. Collaborate with various internal groups and suppliers to design testing protocol and perform testing on all primary/secondary packaging systems. Establish operational performance guidelines for bag sizing, forming films, tray packing and box loading operations. This shall include establishing equipment capacities, process efficiencies, and minimumperformance standards for packaging applications. This shall also include problem-solving to identify and eliminate performance issues and establishing control criteria to assure proper package performance. Other responsibilities include:Develop packaging specifications for FMPRs (new product, revised product specs, pack changes etc.); Establish tares for all packaging material and manage any discrepancy issues; Coordinate pricing information and ensure packaging database reflects accurate pricing; Troubleshoot packaging operational issues; Coordinate and manage all packaging vendors; Collaborate with plant operations to ensure optimum packaging performance (packaging processes, material, equipment, maintenance etc.); Develop and implement packaging process improvement plans and cost reduction goals; Collaborate, develop and implement R&D packaging projects. Additional items to mention would be coordinate and collaborate with Claims departmentand QA on packaging issues, evaluations of packaging materials that include pallet design, distribution studies, and all other associated packaging projects, as assigned and coordinate and collaborate with Ops, Material Handling, QA, Accounting, Sales, Purchasing, IEs, Engineering, Legal and other internal groups on packaging matters.


Education: B.S. in Packaging Engineering or equivalent Engineering experience.

Experience: Must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of plant operations and packaging processes. Expertise in the areas of flexible, corrugated, and packaging processes/applications is desirable.

Computer Skills: General knowledge of Microsoft office products such as Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook. Working knowledge CAD (preferred).

Travel: Frequent and sometimes prolonged travel is involved. Approximately 50%.
